If you’ve never been to Shaldon, you’ve missed a real treat. Situated on the South Devon coast across the Teign estuary and opposite the resort of Teignmouth, Shaldon is an unspoilt village with a thriving community. Many families in the village are still linked to the fishing industry and with a great range of local shops and attractions, it’s an ideal place for a relaxing holiday. Shaldon isn’t as commercial as many of the South Devon towns, but is perfect if you want to experience real Devon life firsthand.

The original settlement was a little upstream, where the fertile valley was cultivated. Shaldon is built on reclaimed land from silt, and there is a retaining wall that prevents the sea from returning to the beaches. Gradually the inhabitants turned to fishing, although the village still has a very rural feel.

There are some great days out around Shaldon, with clean beaches that are ideal for swimming, sailing, rowing, paddling and rock pool exploring. Apart from the main estuary beach front in Shaldon, there is the popular Ness beach. Ness Cove lies at the foot of the magnificent Ness Headland, a red hued landmark feature of the South Devon coastline. The Ness beach is accessed via an original Smugglers tunnel, that comprises both a sloping path down, and some steps. Ness Cove is one our most secluded and picturesque beaches, completely enclosed by the shelter of the cliffs above. Mainly shingle, the beach graduates gently towards the sea, and provides a great swimming area. Fishing for shrimps in the rock pools, or try  fishing from the beach. RELAX !!sit and watch the rest of the world go by. You can book the beach for evening barbeques, via the Teignbridge District Council

You may be surprised to hear that we make a rather good bottle of wine here in South Devon. The Old Walls Vineyard is situated on steeply sloping south facing land, and there is evidence to show the Romans had a vineyard here nearly two thousand years ago. You can visit the vineyard and try a tipple of the local Devon wine. There is fine dining restaurants and, of course, top quality seafood noted for its mussels.

For a great party, Shaldon Water Carnival features what could be the oldest running regatta in the world. It’s a festival of watery fun and ideal for families. There are many other events for the whole family run throughout the year.
