Today, Burgh Island is most famous for its hotel but over the centuries the island has been a monastery, a pilchard fishing port and a popular smuggler's den. Famour guests include Agatha Christie, Edward and Mrs. Simpson, Noel Coward, the Beatles and more recently Whoopi Goldberg. It's said to have been a meeting place for Churchill and Eisenhower before the D-Day invasions. |
