The coat of arms for Devon was officially established in 1926. The red-crowned lion on a silver field respresents the arms of Richard Plantagenet, the Earl of Cornwall. The chief, or upper part, displays an ancient ship at sea respresenting Devon's seafaring tradition and the Latin motto 'Auxilio Divino' (by divine aid), was the motto adopted by Sir Francis Drake.

Devon's county flag is only seven years old! It started life as a discussion on the BBC Devon website. The colours of the flag are believed to represent the green banner with white circles that Lord Exmouth flew at the Bombardment of Algiers, also the sporting colours worn by the rugby union team at Exeter University and the Plymouth Argyle football team.
